Cultural Competency

Summary

  Many shows are not historically as diverse in North America. For example, many movies depict an American perspective with very few visible ethnicity. However, in the last decade, many ethnic backgrounds are given the spotlight, whether Korean, French, Spanish, or Chinese.

Krefting and Krefting (1991) defines culture as based on:

1) Culture is a system of learned patterns of behavior;

2) It is shared by members of the group rather than being the property of an individual;

3) It includes effective mechanisms for interacting with others and with the environment.

This suggests that culture is very fluid and is defined by society and by the individual. To an extent, this can include LGBTQ communities, but is beyond the scope of this website. Note that there are no reference hierarchy: no groups are above another certain group. During the eighteenth century, race was indirectly used to categorize and rank individuals. This would become more defined during the prominance of slavery in the United States (American Anthropological Association, 2007). This is important in reflecting diversity of human society.

  It is well researched that there are differing views of how males and females are treated by their peers, especially in sporting activities (Goodwin, nd). A individual that is culturally prepared because there are many different slurs and body gestures that are known between cultural groups such as Spanish-speaking

groups, Asian peers. These variations create a defined social structure that may limit the opportunities of specific groups.

      Quite often, being culturally sensitive is beneficial, as “racism” may be implied by well-intended material and may not reflect well on the creator, as is shown by the American Red Cross poster on pool safety.

Teaching Strategies

As part of a flipped classroom model, students can research a known media that features multicultural characters, and introduces their stories to the viewer or reader. For example, Power Rangers (Au, nd) can be introduced by one student which recognizes the diverse cultures of the American landscape. In particular, the series exemplify the empowerment, and team spirit (Allison, 2010, 76), but this show also depicts the “superhero” category that uses destructive behaviour to resolve against the antagonist. This brings an excellent integration with social justice issues, such as how to resolve problems with other non-abusive means.

    Likewise, by roleplaying, such as between different characters of different ethnical backgrounds, (Carter, 2015), the awareness of cultural competency and collaboration with others improves for the individual.

Assistive Technologies

Student with writing or speech difficulties diagnosed by speech therapist or psychologists can work on a project by contributing one’s own history or his ancestry to the Oral History Museum within the Multicultural History Society of Ontario, as part of a grade 10 history summative project.

Cultural factors that affect assistive technology delivery:

1    Use of term

2    Balance of work and play

3    Sense of personal space

4    Values regarding finance

5    Role assumed in the family

6    Knowledge of disabilities and source of information

7    Beliefs about causality

8    View of the inner working of the body

9    Sources of social support

10    Acceptable amount of assistance from others

11    Degree of importance attributed to physical appearance

12    Degree of importance attributed to independence

13    Sense of control over thing that happen

14    Typical or preferred coping strategies

15    Style of expressing emotions

(Krefting, Krefting, 1991)

Certain regional differences are possible for the sense of personal space. For example, WeChat is popular amongst Chinese citizens, and VK in Russia. These can be used in place of WhatsApp for ELL students to electronically communicate in an online setting, which Allagui (2014) suggests may improve motivation in writing.
